Stationed at the corner of Fourth and Cherry streets, Kernel Kustard lets locals sample the snacks, sandwiches and sweets Chicago is famous for. The restaurant is the brainchild of former Krispy Kreme executive D.J. McKie and his wife, Jennifer (both Chicago natives). They opened the first Kernel Kustard in 2007 along Hanes Mall Boulevard and a second location two years later in downtown. As McKie often says, the menu contains "all the things that make us smile" from Chicago.
As the name implies, the restaurant prides itself on its frozen custard — a creamier, richer version of ice cream — and its gourmet, fire-roasted popcorn. While many folks have tried the tasty treats, the best kept secret is the delicious Food. This is especially true during The Big Eat, as Kernel Kustard will sell a signature food item for half-off each Tuesday. Choices include the Traditional Chicago Dog the Italian Beef Sandwich and the Chicken Vesuvio Sandwich, all of which are made fresh on-site. Our advice? Go for the Food, but save room for the sweets!
