The Appalachian Cultural Museum, part of Appalachian State University, was created to foster an understanding of the people of the Appalachian Mountains and to serve as a laboratory for new museum ideas. Through exhibits, publications, and special events, the Museum presents the rich traditions of the region. The Museum gives new meaning to life in western North Carolina in a manner that is authentic and non-stereotypical. In its Museum you can have an extraordinary collection of self-portraits by North Carolina artists. These works, ranging in media from pencil sketches and watercolor paintings to ceramics, woodcarving, metal-work, weaving, and marquetry, show the incredible diversity of citizens and artists of this region. The Museum exhibits are now closed. However, the Museum is happy to arrange specialized programs by professional presenters who are recognized experts in their respective areas.
