In 1981, a core group of Watauga County residents who love the arts and wanted to protect Appalachian culture and crafts gathered together and formed the Watauga Arts Council. Their goal was to create activities and events that shared their love with the community, that educate children, that continue the tradition of artistry and craftsmanship in the High Country, and that provide artists with the assistance they need to grow and develop their voice.

The Center for Appalachian Studies, an interdisciplinary program of University College at Appalachian State University, was established in 1978 to coordinate and promote curriculum offerings, public programs, and research activities on the Appalachian region. Built on the good work of generations of Appalachian scholars, including folklorist Amos Abrams and Cratis Williams, considered the father of Appalachian Studies, the Center works to illuminate and sustain the region's rich history, cultures, communities, and ecology.
Murphy's restaurant was founded in 1988 by Erik & Stephen Larson and Tom Phillip. Murphy's was originally located on Hwy. 105 where Comfort Suites now exisist. Murphy's moved to historic downtown boone on King St. in 1996. It is settled among a wide variety of shopping and is within walking distance to Appalachian State University.
Before it was Murphy's the building was occupied by the Watauga Democrat.
