Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Raynor-Stronach House, built in 1871. It is one of the four surviving homes of the 11 original homes that started the Oakwood Neighborhood, now the Historic Oakwood District, the 19th century Raleigh neighborhood which gives the Inn its name.

A. B. Stronach was one of the sons of W. Stronach, a stone cutter from Scotland who came to Raleigh to help build the capitol building.  A. B. and his brother W. C. were grocers.  The home remained in the Stronach family until the early 1940's when the home was sold to John W. Woodard.  Mr. Woodard owned the home until 1984.

The Raynor-Stronach home was converted into Wake County and Raleigh's First Bed & Breakfast, opening on June 1, 1984.

The Inn has been decorated with period antiques which allows guests to enjoy the romance of the Victorian era without giving up the comforts of modern conveniences.

Each of the six beautiful guest rooms at The Oakwood Inn has its own bathroom  with shower, private phone line, dial-up or WIFI, cable television, and working fireplace. Guest can relax in several common areas and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
