Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Founded in 1950, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary is an institution of higher learning and a Cooperative Program ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention offering advanced degrees, masters programs and general theological programs on the beautiful former campus of Wake Forest College.

A Southeastern education is rooted in the conviction that faithful learning is a part of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Southeastern’s faculty is committed to the integration of faith and learning, and at Southeastern we abide by the motto, “Every classroom, a Great Commission classroom.” We hope that in every course you will be challenged to have a heart for the nations and equipped to serve in Great Commission churches and Great Commission agencies wherever God may call you. The Southeastern Mission Statement reflects this commitment: Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary seeks to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping students to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission.

Our confessional statements, the Abstract of Principles and the Baptist Faith & Message, affirm the Bible as the authoritative Word of God. The Scriptures serve as the foundational text for all we do at Southeastern. Consistent with this commitment to biblical fidelity, our faculty covenant to teach in accordance with and not contrary to the Abstract of Principles and the Baptist Faith & Message.

To equip students to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission, the Southeastern Faculty build curricula and courses, drawing upon the great tradition of Christian orthodoxy and our Baptist heritage, to develop the following core competencies so that Southeastern graduates:

  • Spiritual Formation Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue an authentically Christian way of life, manifested by trust in God, obedience to Christ’s commands, and love of God and neighbor.
  • Biblical Exposition Demonstrate the ability to properly and effectively interpret, apply, and communicate the Scriptures.
  • Theological Integration Demonstrate the ability to understand and apply the doctrines of Christianity to life and ministry.
  • Ministry Preparation Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and Christian disposition necessary for ministry and leadership in the church and the world.
  • Critical Thinking and Communication Demonstrate the ability to think critically, argue persuasively, and communicate clearly.
  • We strive to do all of this while cultivating in students a delight in God, His Word, and His Church.
