Roan Mountain

This national forest is on 6,805 feet in the highest point. The Roan is famous for its' natural gardens filled with a potpourri of wildflowers and rare plants and is most famous for its natural gardens of Catwba RHODODENDRONS. The mountain's treeless areas, called "balds," offer panoramic views across a sweeping flow of grasses. Arranged on the summit are spruce-fir forests, an ecosystem normally found in Canada.

Another feature is the site of the Cloudland Hotel. Passing nearby is the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Georgia to Maine. It is an ideal place to organize picnics and enjoy nature.

CLOUDLAND HOTEL BUILT IN LAND OF SKY

Today only a trace remains of a 300-room hotel built in 1885 on the Roan Mountain summit. Brainchild of Civil War General John T. Wilder, the Cloudland hotel became a retreat for hay fever sufferers and city folk. Advertising the mountain's pristine environment, one ad states, "Come up out of the sultry plains to the Land of the Sky-magnificent views where the rivers are born.. one-hundred mountain tops over 4,000 feet high, in sight." Sometime around 1910, the building was abandoned. Attributed to the hotel's demise were the expense of shipping goods and the short 3-month business season. From the hotel's site, visitors can view the mountain balds sitting in a row. In the summer,, the summit's cool and gentle breeze offer refreshment from the oppressing heat below.

Dellinger Grist Mill

Dellinger Grist Mill on Cane Creek was established by Reuben Dellinger in 1867. The mill was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in November, 1998 and has been open to the public since 2000. Cornmeal, and grits are available, ground from the finest USDA approved mountain grown corn. Currently grind corn into cornmeal and grits utilizing the same time-honored methods and machinery what ancestors used. All products are available at the Mill, The Orchard at Altapass, and at Young's Fuel Service in Bakersville.

Blue Ridge Fishing Adventures

Orchard at Altapass:

The Historic Orchard at Altapass is a 100-year-old apple orchard turned Appalachian Cultural Center celebrating the people, music, art, and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. OakMoon Creamery:

OakMoon Creamery, which boasts that it makes “Old World-Style Goat Cheese with a Blue Ridge Flair.” The little shop is located in the basement of the Johnson Building, just off NC-226 and only a few feet from Cane Creek. The owners, Cynthia Sharpe and Dwain Swing, turn out some incredibly good cheeses. These are not the farmer’s cheeses you buy at your local country store to eat with Saltines for lunch either.

Doanie Mama's Big House

Doanie Mama's Big House was built in 1917 by Mr. Charlie Greene, a beloved and notable Bakersville attorney with a national reputation. The Ledfords first restored the main house and later renovated external buildings for use as guest houses and apartments. Original leaded glass doors lead one into the large foyer which features two-inch thick oak sliding doors as entries into either of two formal parlors. Hardwood floors and period art and furniture grace the entire house. Tours are available by appointment.

Appalachian Quilt Trail:

“A Clothesline of Quilts,” consists of a series of quilt sites strung together in Eastern Tennessee, from the Kentucky/West Virginia line to the north, down to the North Carolina line to the south. This series of scenic driving trails, takes the traveler to view vividly painted quilt squares installed on the barns and buildings of participating communities. Five Western North Carolina arts councils have collaborated with HandMade to create vibrant quilt patterns painted on wooden squares and installed on barns, public buildings and shops, forming a series of self-guided driving trails.
