Apex is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, a satellite city of Raleigh. Located in southwestern Wake County, Apex combines a relaxing small-town atmosphere with convenience to big-city amenities. It was a small town once called "Log Pond" and later named Apex. The name "Apex" was adopted because the community was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. In July 2007, CNN/Money magazine ranked Apex #14th on its list of the nation's top 100 small towns.
Local attraction:Jordan Lake State Recreation AreaThis Natural Reserve is between the counties of Wake and Chatham. In this area you can perform various activities, from camping and fishing to swimming practice. This area is the summer home of the bald eagle. The Apex train depotThe Downtown Historic District has commercial/residential buildings dating back to the late 1800's which represent a large variety of architectural styles. Many buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Apex train depot, built sometime between 1867 and 1873, is designated as a Wake County landmark. The depot location marked the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad. Maynard-Pearson HouseThe Maynard-Pearson House, located at 1101 Olive Chapel Road in Apex, was constructed by Mr. James Jackson Maynard and Civil D. Pearson Maynard in the 1870's on land given to Civil D. Pearson by her father's will. It was deeded to the Maynard-Pearson House Trust, a 501c3 nonprofit entity, and now serves as the home of the Apex Historical Society. It is being used as a museum of rural living in the past, hosts educational tours. New Hope Valley RailwayThis delightful train ride and museum are located 10 minutes from Apex on Old US 1 in Bonsal. Train rides are available every hour on the hour from noon to 4:00pm on the first Sunday of each month, from May through December. Contact: Ph. (919) 362-5416. Christmas ParadeThe Apex Jaycees sponsor an annual Christmas parade the first Saturday in December. This parade features bands from area schools, floats sponsored by local merchants, scout troops, antique cars, majorettes and Santa Claus.
