Sossoman Funeral Home

SOSSOMAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY CENTER provides custom and personalized funeral services to meet all the expectations and financial considerations of those it serves.

It is locally owned and operated by Calvin and Mary Lou Sossoman, Rick Hood and jimmy Kirksey.

Located at 1011 S.Sterling St., Morganton, the staff offers advanced planning through its Decisions Made Early program and funeral and memorialization services as well as providing peace of mind to families who choose cremation as the method of disposition by providing an onsite crematory.

The funeral home has been in business in Burke County for 62 years and incorporated in March 1949. Today it has seven professional staff-licensed funeral directors.

The staff includes Calvin Sossoman, president, funeral director; Mary Lou Sossoman, secretary/treasurer, funeral director, certified pre-planning consultant; Rick Hood, vice president, funeral director; Jimmy Kirksey, vice-president, funeral director, embalmer; Larry Connell, funeral director, embalmer; Grayland Bailey, funeral director; and Mary Koontz, funeral director. The pre-planning counselor and funeral license apprentice is Kim Pugh, plus there are 10 office and funeral assistants: Brandon Koontz and Susan Rector both full-time; Faye Stephenson, Edwina Clontz, Sam Smith, Robert Small, Ray Smith, Lisa Hood, Dotty Kirksey, Diane Hughes, Ronny Childres, David Brown and Anita Dougher.

The founders, J.C. and Smaro Sossoman, remain the staff's inspiration to provide funeral services to all they serve in a manner that Burke County has been accustomed to under their leadership and direction.

Sossoman Funeral Home started as a small enterprise to provide helpful services for families in grief and remains today a family operation still committed to a high standard of professional, compassionate care.

The funeral home has long drawn attention for its collection of paintings and small antiques in its lobby areas. Outside, the grounds command a sweeping view of Blue Ridge foothills and is noted for the elegantly manicured grounds, reflecting the firm's attention to the families they serve.

The staff values the loyalty that area families have, in turn, shown to the firm, and is continually striving to find additional ways to better meet the needs and wishes of the families they serve.

In December of 2010 Sossoman Funeral Home, Inc. became licensed to operate its own onsite crematory. In 2011 it will start a renovation of its chapel and facilities. Name-brand products offered include Aurora Caskets, Casket Sales, and Winston-Salem Caskets and Wilbert Vaults from the local distributor Hairfield Vault Company plus a range of urns and memorial items.

Sossoman Funeral Home has membership in the following professional organizations; National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), North Carolina Funeral Directors Association (NCFDA) and International Order of the Golden Rule (OGR).
