Founded in 1978, Dore Academy is a K-12, college preparatory school devoted to the education of students with learning disabilities and ADHD. Their philosophy is centered on the principle that all individuals learn in different ways, resulting in an educational approach that must be unique and personalized for each student. To fulfill their philosophy, their teaching programs are highly personalized, and designed to help students perform at a higher academic level and achieve a stronger, more positive self-image. This is accomplished through the Dore Signature Experience, a unique principle of Dore Academy that guides curriculum, assessment, social and emotional development, and their arts and technology program. They believe these facets provide a one-of-a-kind experience and contribute to the high level of achievement among their students.
Admissions:
The mission of Dore Academy is to provide students in grades K - 12, who have specific attention and learning disabilities, the individualized education to achieve their highest potential. The school strives to create an environment that nurtures and protects what they value most in their children: their curiosity, their talents, their character, their humanity and their dreams. Dore Academy uses a rolling admissions policy - they accept applications all year for the following academic year. Depending on availability and students' qualifications, students may be accepted mid-year for the current school year. Their students come from a variety of racial, cultural and financial backgrounds, and from both public and independent schools. Their student population includes, but is not limited to, students who may be diagnosed with a learning difference, dyslexia or attention-deficit disorders. The school does not accept students whose difficulties are primarily behavioral or emotional. Financial aid may be available.
Student Life:
Dore Academy’s academics go beyond the classrooms, expanding on to courts, membership clubs, playing fields and enrichment programs. Whether amateur or seasoned, all students have an opportunity to play competitive sports at Dore. Their athletic programs motivate student-athletes to maintain physical fitness, while emphasizing and maintaining the fundamentals of teamwork, work ethic, sportsmanship, commitment, and the handling of success and failure. This philosophy, combined with excellent coaching and enthusiastic spirit allows, students to explore their athletic strengths and interests. In athletics, as in other areas of their school program, there are many opportunities for students to develop leadership and management skills. Students can serve as captains on teams, or assist coaches in various programs.
