  • Lake Norman - Lake Norman, the state's largest manmade lake was impounded in the early 1960's. Today, Lake Norman stretches 34 miles from Cowans Ford Dam on the southern end to the tailrace of Lookout Lake at the northern end. The lake provides plenty of room to stretch out and relax, with a surface area of 32,510 acres and a shoreline of approximately 520 miles.

  • Leatherwood Mountain - Just a wonderful place to get away from it all. Horseback riding, mountain trails, and cabins are available for a weekend getaway.
  • MerleFest - The Home Church of Flatpicking & Frailing! A great place to learn about this wonderful music festival which takes place each year during the last weekend in April in Wilkesboro. This festival draws star performers from a variety of music genres. The attendance has continued to grow from 6,000 in the first year of 1988 to over 45,000 in 1997. The site includes information on performers, where to stay, ticket information (includes an online ordering form and early bird incentives) and much more.

AREA FESTIVALS

  • Brushy Mountain Apple Festival - The festival is always the first Saturday in October. The streets of North Wilkesboro are closed off as over 20,000 visitors enjoy crafts, antiques, art, food, music and much more.

  • Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain - With early-morning mist rising from the lochs and white rhododendron blossoms snowing down upon the forest floor, the high mountains of Western North Carolina beckon the ancient spirits. In answer to the call, a hundred tartan banners unfurl, the sounds of bagpipes will echo through the glen, and thousands of kilt-clad Scots will make their way to the circle of colorful tents ringing the field at the base of Grandfather Mountain. Nowhere in the New World is there a place more reminiscent of the Scottish highlands than here at the home of America's grandest Highland Games. We want to welcome you and your family to come and join in the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans.   • MerleFest - One of the biggest bluegrass festivals in the Southeast. It happens the last weekend of April each year. Each year it gets bigger and better. Many well-known bluegrass, country and Cajun performers are scheduled each year.
