Theater in Winston-Salem

Arts and Innovation come to life at venues throughout Winston-Salem. From the local productions to the college and university stages, there are plenty of standing ovations any time of year. Theater lovers can also time their Winston-Salem visits according to a number of unique events. During the world-renowned National Black Theatre Festival, held every other August, more than 65,000 attendees enjoy a week-long showcase of more than 100 theatrical performances. The festival is produced by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, which presents up to four of its own productions each year. The Children’s Theatre of Winston-Salem, too, entertains crowds from fall through spring.

Another venue for immersing oneself in some of the best performing arts in the country is at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. More than 1,100 students from high school through graduate school train for careers in dance, design and production (including a visual arts program), drama, filmmaking, and music. Students, faculty and guest artists present more than 200 performances and screenings a year at school facilities and in touring appearances throughout North Carolina, the Southeast and abroad. Visitors should view the UNC School of the Arts calendar to see the wide variety of performance choices staged throughout the school year.

Film lovers can catch an Indie at downtown’s a/perture cinema, and each April is the “not-to-be-missed” 10-day-long RiverRun International Film Festival, one of the premier film festivals in the Southeastern United States, when actors and filmmakers, industry moguls and enthusiastic audiences gather for an assortment of feature-length films and shorts from dozens of countries.
