Highland Homes

At Highland Homes, their goal is to build the highest quality homes that meet both the needs and budgets of their clients. As a Certified Green Professional company, they prefer to build “green homes” that can be Energy Star Certified, which means they’ve utilized a significant number of renewable, energy-saving components. The use of these components helps protect the environment and prevent global climate change.

They're committed to making their homes the best long-term values for their owners. They build your home the way they would build their own home.

W. Brett Scantlin holds a North Carolina Unlimited Residential General Contractor's license. He is a graduate of North Carolina State with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served as an engineering intern with HNTB of Raleigh, where he worked in the Airport Design Group. Projects he participated in ranged from building new runways and terminals to parking decks. He served as a liaison between the FAA and contractors, ensuring that all construction met FAA specifications.

Brett next worked with Pierce Homes of the Carolinas, where he was a Land Development Supervisor. In this capacity he supervised the entire land procurement and development process. His duties included land discovery and testing, landowner negotiations, meeting with town governments, overseeing engineering, and managing contractors. Throughout the process he met continuously with federal and state inspectors to ensure proper land-development guidelines were being met. During Brett's tenure he oversaw the procurement of enough land to create more than 1,100 lots.

Upon moving to Banner Elk in 2004, Brett started his own construction company, Kellbrick Construction. He has worked as both a construction supervisor and as a subcontractor. Among his projects were a 3,000sf Suwanee River Log Cabin on Beech Mountain and a 6,200sf custom home at the Glens of Grandfather.

Brett and his wife, the former Catherine Crumpler of Blowing Rock, are both triathletes. In 2006 they completed Cycle North Carolina, a 448 mile trek from Banner Elk to Emerald Isle. Brett and Catherine, a nationally certified counselor and director of the High Country Women's Fund, live in Boone with their two dogs, Ina and Madison.
