Aside from all the beautiful scenery as a great reason to visit the High Country this summer, we've also got some fun, great summertime activities for the whole family to enjoy – from the kids to the grandparents and in between.


From mining for precious gems to racing around the track in a go-cart and much, much more – we've got plenty of fun ways to fill those lazy days of summer. With our gorgeous views and perfect weather – nice and warm during the day and then cool in the evening, there is no place other than the High Country for your next family vacation.

Foggy Mountain Gem Mine

Gem mining has played a vital role into shaping the history of the mountains of North Carolina. Today, you too can share in that experience in our clean, safe, family friendly environment. At Foggy Mountain Gem Mine we do all the hard work for you. Simply purchase a bucket filled with gemstone ore from local and non-local mines and sift the material in our covered flume area. Over forty different minerals may be found at our mine, and gemstone quality ore is guaranteed in every bucket.

Fun ‘N Wheels

Fun ‘N Wheels is an exciting go-kart race track located next to our motel. They feature an arcade, a small Ferris wheel for children, bumper cars, a gyro, and fast paced racing. The entire family is sure to have a good time and enjoy some friendly competition.

Orchard at Altapass

Celebrating one hundred years! The Historic Orchard at Altapass is a 101-year-old apple orchard turned Appalachian Cultural Center celebrating the people, music, art, and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains in North Carolina. Built by the Clinchfield Railroad in 1908, the Orchard sits right on the Parkway providing some of the most amazing scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Ultimate Frisbee

Boone Ultimate was established in the late 70s - early 80s by The Nomads, Appalachian State University's (ASU) club Ultimate team. Around 2000, the Lady Nomads emerged on the scene to birth ASU women's Ultimate. Starting in 2005 local pickup games emerged and the passion for Ultimate began to grow beyond the college scene. The BUA was formed in Spring 2008 to establish ONE Ultimate community.

Barter Theatre

Abingdon, VA ~ Named for the practice of "bartering" or offering goods in exchange for the price of admission, the Barter Theatre has entertained audiences with professional actors in classic roles since the height of the Depression in 1933. Chimney Rock Park

Chimney Rock, NC ~ Visitors never forget the 75-mile view atop the massive 535-million-year-old "chimney" of rock, nor the 26-story elevator ride toward unusual rock formations such as Moonshiner's Cave, Devil's Head and Exclamation Point. Natural Bridge of Virginia
