If you drive south just past the quaint downtown of Blowing Rock on U.S. Highway 321 you will find the town’s namesake. Overlooking the John’s River Gorge, The Blowing Rock is a vast cliff, standing 4,000 feet above sea level.

Northwesterly winds travel through the gorge towards The Blowing Rock and form what is called a “flume” once they reach the wall of rock.

Even without a storm forming over the gorge—an impressive sight in itself, if you happen to be there at the right time—there is a steady wind that flows and maintains the flume at fairly consistent levels.

This way, a lightweight object—a napkin, for example—can be thrown over the edge of the cliff and would most likely be cast upwards and back into the hands of the thrower.

The legend of The Blowing Rock adds to the intrigue surrounding the flume phenomenon by attaching a poignant love story to it.

It is said that many years ago there was a beautiful maiden of the Chickasaw tribe, whose beauty captured the attentions of a white man. Apprehensive of the white man’s intentions, the girl’s father took her from their home in the plains and made the journey to The Blowing Rock so she might live in the protection of a squaw mother. Daydreaming upon the cliffs one day, the maiden spotted a Cherokee brave walking through the gorge and teasingly shot an arrow in his direction.

A courtship soon ensued between the two, and they became lovers who wandered together through the gorge and spent entire days enjoying one another’s company. Then one evening, a sky of deep red hue brought them both to the top of The Blowing Rock. To the brave, the heaven’s unusual tint was a sign of peril, and meant that he should return immediately to his tribe in the plains.

The maiden begged the brave not to leave her, and her lover, torn between his tribal duties and adoration for the maiden, leapt from the Rock and disappeared in the depths of the wilderness. Day after day on The Blowing Rock the maiden prayed for his return.

Alas, one evening the maiden watched as the sky turned crimson as it had on the day her lover was lost. Suddenly, a great gust of wind blew up the rock wall of the gorge and returned her lover to her waiting arms.
