ANTIQUING High Country
There’s a contemporary legend in the High Country that claims one can travel from Blowing Rock to Banner Elk without ever once being forced to step foot outside an antique store. As with most legends, there is only a portion of truth in the telling.
The High Country does have an abundance of antiques dealers. And that’s good if you’re among the thousands of High Country autumn visitors who love nothing more than a day browsing along the antique hunting trail. It also means you’ll never have to drive very far before another store pops up to pique your interest.
Two reasons the High Country is good for antiquing:
First, these are the oldest mountains on the continent. Old. Get it? The place just drips with tradition. There are families in these mountains who’ve lived on the same piece of ground for 200 years and change. So there’s always a fair sampling of heirlooms with regional roots.
Second, antiques are everywhere. They’re practically hanging from the trees. And your preference in shops can range from upscale antique-chic, to downright roadside rustic.
Following is a small sampling of antique dealers and malls throughout the High Country. And, even if the claims of that modern legend turn out to be ever so slightly over stated, we’re betting you’ll find plenty of antiques to keep you busy.
