McDowell County Head Start

As many of you know, education on all levels is experiencing an all lime low in regard to funding and support. We appreciate the fuel that you recognize the work that we are doing and the valuable services we provide for the children and families in McDowell County.

We have 6 facilities across McDowell County serving approximately 260 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers annually. Our centers are licensed through the Division of Child Development and maintain 4 &5 star ratings. The Early Head Stan and Nebo centers maintain a 4 star rating.

Our Sugar Hill, Eastfield, Old Fort, and North Cove centers all maintain a 5 star rating which is the highest that can be attained.

Maintaining these ratings requires us to follow strict guidelines including: keeping the child to staff ratio as low as possible, making sure that facilities allow adequate space per child and that all facilities including playgrounds are safe and well maintained, and that staff are well qualified in regards to Early Childhood education and that they meet all required training guidelines annually. Staff are CPR and First Aid certified on a regular schedule.

We are currently enrolling in all options for school year 20112 now 652-3229 for more information. Come apply-don’t wait!

We offer a paying program for those who do not qualify for Head Stan. Our paying program is located at the Sugar Hill center. These children gel many of the same services as our Head Start children. Our program is an educational program NOT just a daycare. Our staff works diligently with early learning, preparing children for kindergarten, and helping them adjust socially to a school selling before entry into public schools.

Al this time, we arc trying lo expand our paying program after having to make many difficult cuts at the beginning of our fiscal year lo accommodate a decreased budget. Anyone familiar with education budgets on any level understands "making the most of what you have".

We currently have paying openings for 3-5 year olds at the Sugar Hill center for fall enrollment. We are also looking at expanding the paying program to include other centers besides Sugar Hill in the near future. If you are interested in any of these options or our rates please call us at: 652-3229 for more detailed information or log on to www.
